Hill's Statement on the "Reduce Unnecessary Spending Act of 2010"

Statement

Date: May 24, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Baron Hill issued the following statement after President Obama announced that he would be sending the "Reduce Unnecessary Spending Act of 2010" to Congress. According to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), this proposal would allow the President to submit a package of rescissions shortly after a spending bill is passed, and Congress would be required to consider such recommendations as a package and hold an up-or-down vote on it.

"I appreciate the President's efforts on putting his words into real action regarding fiscal responsibility. The Blue Dog Coalition has been on the front lines of this issue, and my colleague from Idaho, Congressman Walt Minnick, recently introduced the Budget Legislative Enforcement Tool (BELT) Act, as part of the Blue Dog Blueprint for Fiscal Reform. Like the President's proposal, the BELT Act provides for expedited rescission, a budget enforcement tool with a history of bipartisan support that helps members of Congress and the administration to identify and eliminate wasteful and unnecessary government spending.

Budget enforcement tools like PAYGO and expedited rescission will make for tough votes in Congress, but we have to get our fiscal house in order. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues across the aisle on enacting these strong fiscal reforms."
