Bennet Statement on Meeting with Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan

Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado, released the following statement following his meeting with Elena Kagan, President Obama's nominee to serve on the United States Supreme Court:

"I was impressed with Solicitor General Kagan's intellect, demeanor and accomplished résumé. Ms. Kagan strikes me as someone who would be a pragmatic, non-ideological jurist with an appreciation for legal precedent and the Constitution as well as a firm grasp of how the law affects the lives of the American people.

"We had a productive and insightful conversation that focused on her judicial philosophy as well as her approach toward deliberating cases as a member of the Supreme Court. I did not ask Ms. Kagan to prejudge any potential cases and believe it is important that she not do so. The confirmation process should be about her qualifications and understanding of her potential role as a justice.

"I look forward to continuing to learn more about her approach to the law as the nomination process continues and her hearings begin. These occasions, as well as the debate on the Senate Floor, should provide an opportunity for a civil, fair and thorough review of Ms. Kagan's record that focuses on her qualifications to serve the country on the U.S. Supreme Court."
