President Felipe Calderon Visit

Statement

Date: May 24, 2010

Last week Mexican President Felipe Calderon traveled to Washington to meet with President Obama and address a Joint Session of Congress. President Calderon should be commended for his unfaltering resolve in the fight against Mexican drug cartels and gangs, and he reaffirmed that commitment in his address to Congress. I continue to support him in those efforts. I did take issue, however, with his decision to criticize our own state and federal laws. It was not his place to voice unfounded criticisms about Arizona's new immigration law, considering the recently amended version clarifies that racial profiling is not permitted. President Calderon's comments regarding our gun laws were equally as disturbing. Let me be clear: the Second Amendment is not open for diplomatic negotiation--with Mexico or any other nation.

As President Calderon returns home, it is my hope that President Obama will demonstrate to the American people a firm commitment to border security by fully and immediately resourcing our border law enforcement agencies as they work to keep Texans and other border state citizens safe.
