Begich Statement on Death of Wally Hickel

U.S. Sen. Mark Begich released the following statement on the death of former Alaska Governor Walter J. Hickel:

"Alaska lost one of its true visionaries with the passing of Governor Hickel. He was creative and courageous and always put the interests of the state first as he advocated that Alaskans should control our own destiny through what he called the "owner state.'

"As an internationalist, Governor Hickel helped put Alaska on the world's map by telling our story to leaders across the globe and advising many on Alaska's best qualities.

"Governor Hickel transcended partisan politics, and was a friend and mentor to many. His decades of public service, his focused vision and his forceful advocacy for Alaska will always be appreciated by Alaskans and the many Americans who knew him.

"Deborah and I send our thoughts and prayers to Ermalee and the entire Hickel family."
