U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln today made the following comments in reaction to the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court.

"I am pleased that President Obama has moved forward in the process of selecting a nominee to succeed Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court," Lincoln said. "Justice Stevens' sharp legal mind has brought an important perspective to the Supreme Court over many decades, and I hope that the person who fills his seat on the bench possesses the same work ethic, open-mindedness, and commitment to the law.

"I look forward to meeting Ms. Kagan and learning about her experience and qualifications to serve on the nation's highest court. Her nomination raises the possibility of three women serving on the Court at the same time, an exciting prospect. Her professional background would bring additional diversity in experience to the court, as well.

"It is my hope that the confirmation process will move smoothly and respectfully, and I look forward to giving Arkansans a voice in that process."
