McNerney Opposes Pay Raises for Members of Congress

Statement

Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) today voted to abolish an automatic pay raise for Members of Congress for the coming year and save the taxpayers approximately $1 million. A co-sponsor of the legislation, Congressman McNerney has consistently worked to eliminate automatic annual pay raises for Members of Congress.

Congressman McNerney has also donated his automatic increase to local charities in the past, including the Greater Stockton Emergency Food Bank and the Tri-Valley Haven, which provides shelter and counseling for survivors of sexual assault, battered women and their children in the Tri-Valley

"At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, it's just not right for Members of Congress to get a pay raise," said Rep. McNerney. "That's why I've donated my automatic pay increase to local charities and why I'm going to keep fighting to stop these unnecessary increases."

H.R. 5146, Cancel the Pay Raise for Members of Congress in Fiscal Year 2011 Act, passed the House by a vote of 402-15.
