Dahlkemper Statement On Growing List Of Insurers That Will Provide Coverage For Young Adults Under Age 26

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper released the following statement today as Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, Kaiser Permanente, and Humana join the growing list of health insurance companies that will begin to voluntarily implement her Young Adult Healthcare provision of the new health care reform in advance of the September start date:

"These insurance companies are doing the right thing by voluntarily implementing my Young Adult Healthcare provision before September. This year, graduating college students and young adults entering the job market will have the security of affordable health care while they navigate this often turbulent time in their lives. That's good news for young adults and peace of mind for their parents.

"I urge insurance companies in Western Pennsylvania to follow suit and make the same offer to our region's young adults. It's the right thing to do."

Dahlkemper's Young Adult Healthcare plan allows graduating college seniors and young adults to stay on their parents' health insurance plans up to their 26th birthday. This simple reform allows young adults an affordable option for care at no cost to taxpayers. Additionally, health care decisions remain in the home as the choice to keep older children on their health insurance plans is left to parents, not insurance companies.

An estimated 51,000 young adults in the 3rd District can get affordable health insurance under Dahlkemper's provision.
