Gerlach Votes To Stop Automatic Pay Raise For Congress

Congressman Jim Gerlach (PA-6th District) voted Tuesday to stop an automatic pay raise for members of Congress for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts in October. This is the third consecutive year that Gerlach has supported freezing lawmakers' salaries.

"Congress does not deserve a pay raise at a time when nearly one out of 10 Americans is not receiving a steady paycheck," Gerlach said. "I am pleased to support this bill because it is one small step Congress can take to ease the burden on taxpayers and start restoring some badly-needed fiscal responsibility in Washington."

H.R. 5146 passed the House by a margin of 402-15. The bill goes to the U.S. Senate, which recently approved a nearly identical pay-freeze measure.

A 1989 law gives Congress automatic pay raises that generally keep pace with the rate of inflation unless Members vote to reject the salary increase.
