Hastings Establishes Congressional Caucus On Homelessness

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) is pioneering the fight in Congress to end homelessness across the nation. The establishment of the bi-partisan Congressional Caucus on Homelessness is a significant step to bring attention to this sad reality and find solutions to end homelessness among individuals, families, children, youth, and veterans. The mission of the caucus will be to educate Members of Congress and their staff on the many issues affecting the homeless. Hastings will co-chair the Caucus with Reps. Judy Biggert (R-IL), Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), and Geoff Davis (R-KY).

"We live in a country where a large number of people do not have a place they can call home or even a safe place to spend their nights. This is unacceptable and I will continue to push legislation and initiatives to combat this crisis," said Hastings. "I take great pride in bringing this caucus together and am looking forward to working alongside my distinguished colleagues on such an important matter."

Studies indicate that on any given night in America, anywhere from 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless. In 2009, the National Coalition for the Homeless issued a study, which found that during the past two decades there has been a significant increase in homelessness throughout the United States. In the wake of the recession, increases in homelessness also have been reported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, public schools, and local homeless service agencies
