Alexander Votes Against Adding $18 Billion to the Debt

Statement

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement regarding his vote against H.R. 4851, the Continuing Extension Act, that would have added $18 billion to the debt over ten years. Senator Alexander voted for three amendments -- rejected by the Senate majority -- that, without adding to the debt, would have extended unemployment benefits and reimbursed physicians who see Medicare patients:

"Both Republicans and Democrats want to extend unemployment benefits and make certain that doctors who see Medicare patients are properly reimbursed. But Democrats chose to do so by adding to the federal debt, rejecting Republican proposals to do so without adding to the federal debt."
