Issue Position: Crime and Public Safety

Issue Position

Between 2007 and 2008, all crime decreased 2.2% in North Carolina, while violent crime decreased by 1.3%. It's important for the state to do its part, and Senator Vaughan is proud to have:

* Voted for over $11 million in gang prevention and gang intervention grants in last year's budget.
* Voted to enhance GangNet with a grant of almost $2 million.
* Co-Sponsor the Racial Justice Act.

GangNet is a database that state and local law enforcement take advantage of in their constant pursuit of gangs.

The Racial Justice Act will prevent the death penalty from being enforced based on racial motivations. It does not release or grant parole to criminals convicted of capital punishments, but ensures their sentences were handed down justly and fairly without racial bias.
