Dodd: Connecticut Right to Take Advantage of Health Care Reform Provision

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) released the following statement today applauding Governor M. Jodi Rell's decision to transfer the 45,000 individuals in the State-Administered General Assistance (SAGA) program to Medicaid. This is one of many provisions that Senator Dodd fought for in the recently-passed health care reform legislation, which will save states money. Connecticut will save an estimated $53 million by taking advantage of this federal funding.

"There are many aspects to the health care reform legislation that will help Connecticut residents get the medical insurance they need--and save our state money at the same time," said Dodd. "I applaud the state for taking the initiative to seek out these provisions and applying for federal funding that will allow more individuals to be covered under Medicaid."

Dodd included a provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that will allow Connecticut to move individuals participating in SAGA onto Medicaid starting April 1st. Additionally, they will receive federal matching funds beginning this month from the federal government to cover this population.
