Feingold Statement on the Signing of the New START Treaty

"I am pleased our government has signed the New START Treaty, which will strengthen our national security. Ratification of this treaty will reduce the dangers associated with an unnecessarily large US nuclear arsenal, while enhancing the international cooperation needed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and material. The treaty will also reduce the size of Russia's nuclear arsenal, which is inadequately secured and would present a significant danger if it fell into the hands of terrorists. In a time of terrorism and of rising international concern about Iran's nuclear program, international cooperation remains key to preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. We must act now to address the spread of nuclear weapons and materials, and this treaty is an important step toward that end."
