Edwards Statement On His Vote Against Withdrawal Of American Troops From Afghanistan

Statement

Date: March 24, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

U.S. Representative Chet Edwards today released the following statement after he voted against legislation that would withdraw American troops from Afghanistan in 30 days:

"I am strongly opposed to withdrawing troops from Afghanistan at a time when our troops are beginning to make progress against the enemy. Afghanistan is where terrorists plotted to kill Americans on September 11th and they remain committed to killing Americans today.

"While the challenges we face in Afghanistan are significant, Secretary Gates has said this week he sees signs of progress, and I believe we have an obligation to listen to our commanders on the ground and see this mission through to ensure the safety and security of the American people."

The bill forcing withdrawal failed in a bipartisan vote of 356 to 65. Edwards represents District 17 in Congress.
