Hare Supports Package Of Bills To Assist Veterans

Press Release

Date: March 23, 2010
Issues: Veterans

This week, Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) voted for a package of bills to assist our nation's veterans.

"We owe our veterans everything," Hare said. "In a tough economy, America's heroes are more susceptible to losing their jobs and their homes. We must take special care of those who have risked their lives to preserve our freedoms. These pieces of legislation will help protect our veterans and provide them more opportunities for upward mobility."

Hare supported the following pieces of legislation:

H.R. 4810-End Veteran Homelessness Act of 2010
This bill would increase funding for successful homeless veterans programs, require housing counselors at VA medical centers to generate more opportunities for homeless veterans, and require the VA to focus part of its media outreach campaign on homeless women veterans and homeless veterans with children, a provision Hare authored in his Help Our Homeless Veterans Act.

H.R. 3976-Helping Heroes Keep Their Homes Act of 2009
This bill would reauthorize for 5 years home-foreclosure protections to prevent lenders from foreclosing on a veteran's home within nine months after the end of military service. If Congress does not act, these protections would expire at the end of the year.

H.R. 4667-Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2010
This bill increases the rates of compensation for veterans with service-connected disabilities and the rates of dependency and indemnity compensation for the survivors of certain disabled veterans effective December 1, 2010.

H.R. 4592-Energy Jobs for Veterans Act
This bill increases job opportunities for veterans by reimbursing employers for the cost of providing on-the-job training for veterans in the energy sector through a new "Veterans Energy Related Employment Program" of competitive grants.
