Today, Congressman J. Gresham Barrett (SC-03) made the following remarks after House Republicans adopted a unilateral moratorium on all earmarks.
"Earmarking has become the currency of corruption in Congress. It didn't start out that way. But, after years of abuse by those in power we are now at a point where political deals are sealed with the promise of pet projects and pork barrel spending. The system is so broken that if a Congressman chooses not to participate in the process then ultimately his constituents end up paying the price.
The need for reform is clear and today I joined my Republican colleagues in supporting a moratorium on all earmarks for any reason. Now, the challenge for reform rests squarely on the shoulders of the Congressional Democrats.
It is my sincere hope that they will join us in our effort to end the culture of corruption in Washington."
