Congressman Cummings Mourns Loss of Musician Ray Charles

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Elijah E. Cummings today mourned the loss of music legend Ray Charles, who overcame many barriers to become a celebrated Grammy Award-winning singer.
Congressman Cummings released the following statement:

"I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Ray Charles.

"Although Mr. Charles lost his sight as a child, his spiritual insights gave all of us a stronger vision of who we can become as human beings."

"His example showed all of us that we could overcome obstacles to become everything that God means for us to be.

"I am grateful that his voice will remain with us through his many songs such as 'What'D Say,' and 'Hit the Road, Jack.'

"My prayers are with his family.

"He will be deeply missed."
