Do Members Of Congress Deserve A Pay Raise?

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Our nation is facing difficult economic times, an expanding federal deficit and debt, and double-digit unemployment. Yet, Members of Congress are still on track to receive a pay raise in the next fiscal year. I believe this is wrong.

Under the Ethics Reform Act of 1989, salaries for Members of Congress increase automatically unless otherwise declined by Congress. This is wrong both in practice and in the message that it sends the American people.

I have cosponsored H.R. 4255, a bipartisan bill to freeze Member compensation. Freezing compensation is just a small step legislators can take to show they stand with the American people.
