Stabenow: Lone Republican Senator Blocks Extension of Unemployment, COBRA Benefits

Statement

Date: Feb. 26, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) made the following statement after Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) objected to a 30-day extension of unemployment benefits, COBRA benefits, and other important expiring provisions.

"I am outraged that Republican Senator Jim Bunning has chosen to block an extension of unemployment insurance and COBRA health care benefits. We have the highest unemployment rate in the country, and middle-class families are struggling to put food on the table as workers continue searching for new jobs and train for new careers. Now, because of one senator's irresponsible actions, over 61,000 Michigan workers will begin losing their unemployment benefits on Monday.

"These workers and their families cannot afford to wait for help. I remain committed to passing a long-term extension of benefits as soon as possible. Otherwise, thousands more Michigan families will exhaust their benefits in the months ahead. I call on Senator Bunning to put politics aside and to stop filibustering critical assistance for Michigan." --U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow
