Hare Statement In Response To President's State Of The Union Address
Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) tonight released the following statement in response to President Obama's State of the Union address.
"The President said some very good things tonight. But ordinary Americans suffering in this historic economic crisis are demanding more than words, they want action. The President has done an admirable job bringing our economy back from the brink of a depression. His recovery package has created and saved up to 2.4 million jobs, many in Illinois. I appreciate the President's announcement tonight that his Administration will invest more in small businesses, clean energy, and infrastructure. But additional steps must be taken. The President called for a new jobs bill to address our unemployment crisis. I hope he will consider my New Deal for a New Economy Act.
"On health care, the President rightly acknowledged that we should continue to pursue reform that lowers costs for all Americans and reduces the number of uninsured. We must reach this goal even if it requires taking several small steps instead of one giant leap.
"Finally, I agree with the President that bailed out banks must fully repay the taxpayers and Wall Street should be reregulated. We must also put more money in our seniors' pockets by providing them with the cost of living adjustment they so desperately need, something the President did not mention.
"I will continue to fight every day to ensure the people of my district have the ability to make ends meet and that the state of our union is much stronger this time next year."
