Fighting Global Anti-Semitism

Statement

Date: Jan. 25, 2010

This week, we will mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the International Day of Commemoration to remember the victims of the Holocaust. As we pause to remember the horrors of the Nazi genocide, we must reaffirm our commitment to fight anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial in our day -- at home and around the world.

According to a report released yesterday by the Jewish Agency, more global anti-Semitic incidents were reported in 2009 than in any year since World War II. Worldwide, eight people were murdered in acts linked to anti-Semitism -- two here in the United States. To fulfill the promise we made 65 years ago, we cannot remain silent.

As past co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Anti-Semitism, I am dedicated to the fight against global anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial. We must do more to stop this spike in violence -- and to speak out against anti-Semitic rhetoric and Holocaust denial. On this 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, let us work together to turn words into deeds and uphold our promise of "Never Again."
