Statement Of Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) On Guilty Verdict For Tiller Murderer

Statement

"I hope today's verdict will begin to heal the wound to the conscience of our nation inflicted by Dr. Tiller's murderer," said Rep. Maloney. "The jury took only minutes to reject Scott Roeder's attempts to justify the premeditated murder of a doctor who provided care to women who had nowhere else to turn.

"While this verdict is a forceful repudiation of those who would use violence and hate to deny women their constitutional right to choose, we have much more work to do. Any time a doctor has to put his life on the line to perform medical care, it has a chilling effect on Americans' ability to get the care they need. The consequences of Dr. Tiller's murder remain a tragedy not only for women in Kansas, but for women everywhere --especially in areas of the country where there are relatively few abortion providers."
