Obama Spending Freeze 'Good First Step'

Statement

Today, Paul Hodes released the following statement on President Obama's proposed freeze for non-defense discretionary spending; which is to be announced in Tomorrow's State of the Union Address:

"It's about time that Washington follow the lead of middle class families in New Hampshire who have had to make tough choices in their family budgets in these tough economic times and eliminate wasteful spending," said Hodes. "I have been fighting hard to stop spending and reduce the growing deficits, and I am encouraged that President Obama is supporting the spending limits I've been calling for. We must comb over every page of the budget and no program should be spared a thorough review. There is no question that this is a good first step; but more must be done. We must eliminate the billion-dollar subsidies to oil companies and tax breaks for corporations who ship American jobs overseas - which continue to grow our debt and hurt the long term economic security of Granite State families."

Last year, Hodes introduced a proposal which would cap all federal discretionary spending and index it to inflation for the same three year period outlined by the White House proposal.
