Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI), Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, announced today his subcommittee hearing entitled "Treatment of U.S. Automobile Manufacturers in Japan's Cash for Clunkers Program" has been postponed. The postponement comes following an announcement by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to adjust qualifications for the country's "eco-cars" program to allow for greater participation by non-Japanese automakers.

"Yesterday's announcement is a positive step toward allowing U.S. automakers equal access to Japan's "eco-cars" program and is a welcome and necessary adjustment of the program's requirements," Stupak said. "I am confident the work done by the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee has helped secure greater access for the American car industry. We will continue to monitor this situation, and other programs that adversely affect American consumers."

"METI's announcement is a welcome step by Japan toward opening its traditionally closed automobile market," said Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI), the Chairman Emeritus of the Energy and Commerce Committee. "Moreover, I commend chairman Stupak for his vigilance in ensuring other countries adhere to their international trade obligations. I look forward to working with him as we evaluate the effect of METI's recent announcement."

At this time a new date for a hearing on this issue has not been determined.
