Press Release

Date: Jan. 28, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., released the following statement following a briefing update by the Chemical Safety Board on its investigation of the recent chemical leaks at DuPont's Belle, West Virginia plant:

"I commend the U.S. Chemical Safety Board for swiftly mobilizing their resources to address the recent series of safety lapses at our DuPont plant in Belle. Tragically, these unfortunate incidents included a loss of life, and it is imperative that corrections be made and implemented quickly."

"West Virginia has a long and unique relationship with the chemical industry and we understand the need to balance productivity and safety. In providing the initial funding that created the CSB over a decade ago, I felt that the chemical industry needed the benefit of an investigative body that could operate independent of other government agencies and with utmost transparency and engagement of the public. As I was then, I remain committed to seeing to it that the CSB has the resources they need to do the job they were authorized to do. Chemical safety is an issue that affects the lives and livelihoods of so many West Virginians. I am very pleased to see that the CSB is responding quickly, and I will be working very closely with the Board to ensure that they have everything they need to fully investigate all incidents under their jurisdiction."
