Omaha World-Herald - Terry Says 'No' To Pay Raises

Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., today said he will support a bill that would stop the automatic pay raise scheduled for members of Congress in 2011.

The automatic raise system was instituted years ago in an attempt to take politics out of lawmaker salaries. The amount of the raises is tied to pay increases for federal workers, and the raises take effect each year unless Congress votes to stop them.

Congress did just that last year, meaning that rank-and-file members of the House and Senate are making $174,000 in 2010, the same amount as 2009.

Terry said next year's scheduled raises should be scratched as well.

"Millions of people lost their jobs last year and businesses and families continue to struggle to make ends meet," he said.
