The attempted terrorist attack on a commercial airline on Christmas Day should serve as a wakeup call for the President, his Administration and all Americans that we are still at war with individuals bent on destroying our nation and our people.
On Christmas Day, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year old Nigerian national attempted to detonate an improvised explosive device (IED) he smuggled onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit.
Whether it is the Ft. Hood attack perpetrated by a radicalized commissioned officer in the United States Army, radicalized Afghan-American and Pakistan-American university students traveling to Pakistan, or a young Nigerian radicalized and directed to travel to the United States, all are associated with the broader terrorist threat against our homeland.
The security of the American people and homeland is not a partisan issue. All sides need to work together to ensure the safety of our neighbors. We must acknowledge that we are at war with fanatics bent on destroying our country and freedoms. I have recently joined with some of my colleagues on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in calling for the committee to hold a hearing on the failed Christmas Day terror attack in order to fully understand and fix the national and homeland security failures exposed by this attempted terrorist attack.
I was pleased to hear that President Obama will no longer send Guantanamo Bay prisoners from Yemen back to this country, but more must be done. It is disheartening that this Administration is continuing their push to close the Guantanamo Bay prison facility built to house terrorists whose stated goal is to destroy America. I am a proud co-sponsor of the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act. This bill has a straightforward but vital purpose -- to ensure that the terrorists held in the Guantanamo Bay prison are not imported into the United States.
We must remain vigilant when it comes to fighting terrorism and avoid becoming complacent, or else we risk another deadly attack on our people right here at home. I will do everything I can to make sure that America does not drop her guard, including letting this Administration and my congressional colleagues know that we can no longer afford to weaken our resolve in this deadly war.
