Double Digit Unemployment Shows Democrats' Kitchen-Table Disconnect

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Since January, 2007, when Democrats took control of the House and elected Speaker Pelosi, 8.7 million more Americans have found themselves out of work. House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) today issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the U.S. economy continued to lose jobs, keeping unemployment in double digits:

"We need to focus on creating an environment that is conducive to hiring, and unfortunately the agenda of the President and Speaker Pelosi has done just the opposite. The atmosphere created by Democrats' continued push for increased federal regulation, the threat of cap and trade, a government takeover of healthcare, another stimulus, and a runaway deficit has no doubt prevented job creation and economic growth.

"The Democrats' disconnect with kitchen-table issues and the reality faced by families, workers, and small businesses is deeply concerning. This holiday season, families and small business job creators are working harder and cutting back to cope with a tough job market and are understandably frustrated watching Washington do the opposite.

"This week, Republicans offered real solutions, including a "no-cost jobs plan' that could be immediately enacted to create jobs and show a commitment to fiscal responsibility. People need help, and I hope that the President and Speaker Pelosi can put partisanship aside and work with us to implement the common-sense solutions Republicans have offered to put Americans back to work."
