Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL), a member of the House Trade Working Group, today released the following statement in response to comments by President Obama pledging to ratify the U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement.
"With unemployment over 10 percent, our auto industry on life support, and the economy in recession, the U.S.-Korea trade agreement is the last thing our nation can afford. With Democrats working to craft a bill to put people back to work, I am troubled that we are even discussing another job-killing trade agreement. It is well known that South Korea has denied U.S. automakers and beef producers access to its market for decades. At any time, enacting this trade agreement in its current form would be a mistake. Ratifying it in this economic climate makes even less sense."
