Congressman Paul Hodes Encourages Businesses To Hire Veterans, Launches New Small Business Web Page

Press Release

Date: Nov. 12, 2009
Location: Washington, D.C.
Issues: Veterans

One day after Veterans Day, Congressman Hodes asked New Hampshire businesses to consider hiring veterans, and in turn take advantage of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. With many veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan to a difficult economy, Congressman Hodes is reminding businesses that this tax credit lowers taxes for businesses that employ a veteran. To help small businesses take advantage of tax credits and other available assistance, Congressman Hodes has also launched a new section of his website at www.hodes.house.gov/smallbusiness.

"Granite State veterans have served our country with honor overseas, only to return home to have trouble finding a job in this difficult economy," said Congressman Paul Hodes. "This tax credit is good for New Hampshire's small businesses, and will encourage small business owners to hire veterans and provide good jobs for working families. We must do all that we can to ensure that veterans have job opportunities when they return home to our communities."

The jobs and recovery plan that passed earlier this year extends this tax credit through 2010 for businesses that employ veterans. In order to qualify, the veteran must have left the service within five years, and have spent four or more weeks on unemployment during the previous year. New Hampshire businesses are able to write off 40% of the first $6,000 they pay the veteran.

To help small businesses and veterans take advantage of these and other small business programs, Congressman Hodes has launched a new section of his website at www.hodes.house.gov/smallbusiness. This page includes an extensive list of state and federal resources to help spread awareness of tax credits, credit and loan programs, and other types of assistance available to small businesses in the Granite State.

"Small business is big business in New Hampshire," added Congressman Hodes. "This new section of my website will help our small businesses learn about available programs that will help them to create jobs for New Hampshire families, and to lead our economic recovery. I encourage small business owners to visit www.hodes.house.gov/smallbusiness to learn about programs that can help your business succeed."
