Senator Mike Johanns today made the following statement in honor, recognition, and remembrance of the brave men and women who have served in the United States military:
"As we take time today to remember the men and women who have bravely served in our Armed Forces, let us pause to recognize what they have fought to uphold and defend. Whether or not we are aware of it each day, we honor the sacrifices our service members and their families have made every time we demand accountability from our democratic government, exercise our freedom of speech, or freely practice religion. It is only because of our veterans-their bravery, sacrifice, and love of country-that we are free today to chart our own course in the pursuit of happiness.
"I offer my thoughts and prayers to the families of those who have fought and died for our country, and for the victims of the Fort Hood tragedy and their families. I know I speak for all Nebraskans in expressing immeasurable gratitude to our veterans, our men and women currently deployed, and their loved ones. Thank you, and God bless."
Johanns will attend a ceremony tomorrow at Memorial Park hosted by the American Legion. He will also visit the Grand Island Veterans Home to speak with the residents and thank them for their service.
