Neil Cavuto: Did I miss something? The White House today saying stimulus already has done its job, and its already been stimulating. Republican Congressman Eric Cantor joins me now. Congressman, already done its job?
Rep. Eric Cantor: Neil good to be with you. I mean, it is a pretty stunning remark today by Dr. Christina Romer, when she said that the best of the stimulus bill has already been felt. She did indicate that there's nearly $200 billion that has been expended and another $150 obligated but really do the American people see the jobs? What is it that the stimulus money has really done? The striking part of it is Neil, you hear talk all around the Hill in Washington and at the White House that they want to double down on what really has been a mistake.
Cavuto: Do you wonder though that now, in the middle of this debate about whether or not this stimulus has already done its stimulating, now we have all these closed door meetings going on, that the Democrats might have a serious problem on their hand or is this much ado about nothing?
Rep. Cantor: Well listen there is a serious, serious problem for the American people right now. The jobs continue to evaporate. I know most people are expecting unemployment to exceed 10 percent, and we've got to get a handle on this and do what we can to create an environment where people can get back to work. And this notion that somehow we are going to go about another stimulus effort, given the track record of the first stimulus effort, I think is preposterous. The stimulus has not created jobs its simply brought on more debt. What we need to do is we need to look at where the problems are facing the small businesses and the working families in this country. We know there is a looming problem in the commercial real estate market. We know that will impact community banks and regional banks in a vast way. We also know that there are looming problems as far as businesses are concerned with higher taxes because of the type of health care bill and others that are being proposed by Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic majority in Congress.
Cavuto: Many issues, you'd have to rip through them like this guy is ripping through the health care bill. Congressman thank you very much
