Sen. Cornyn Statement On Augustine Report

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, issued the following statement regarding the Human Space Flight Review Committee report, which was released today. The report concluded that "the U.S. human spaceflight program appears to be on an unsustainable trajectory. It is perpetuating the perilous practice of pursuing goals that do not match allocated resources."

"Human space flight is a critical component of our national and economic security, and helps maintain our global competitiveness. We need to devote the necessary resources to have a robust human space flight program. One way we can do this is by redirecting unspent stimulus dollars. Earlier this month, I joined members of the Texas Congressional Delegation in asking the Administration to reallocate $3 billion in stimulus funding to the human space flight program. This is a common-sense solution and would ensure our commitment to NASA's important mission.

"It would be extremely damaging if the Obama Administration, based on their own committee's findings, continues to delay taking the necessary action of setting a course for NASA and devoting the necessary resources and leadership to ensure the agency is able to achieve its goals. I call on President Obama to use today's report release from his committee as a catalyst for submitting to Congress an appropriate mission and budget for NASA and a robust human space flight program," Sen. Cornyn said.
