Congressman Space Hails Enactment Of Major Veterans Legislation Following Bill Signing At The White House

Date: Oct. 22, 2009
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

After visiting the White House for the signing of major legislation ensuring that the care of our veterans is never put in jeopardy as a result of political gamesmanship, U.S. Representative Zack Space (OH-18) today hailed the enactment of major legislation that allows the VA to know their budgets one year in advance.

The legislation signed into law today will provide our veterans with more reliable, timely care and services -- instead of being held hostage as a result of political wrangling.

"This Bill represents a major victory for our veterans," Space said. "For far too long, Washington politicians have been playing politics with the fates of our veterans, which is absolutely unconscionable. Politics has absolutely no place in the way that our American veterans will be treated, and I'm proud to report today that the era of not treating our veterans with the benefits they deserve is over."

The Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act of 2009, H.R. 1016, provides the VA with up to one year in which to plan how to deliver the most efficient and effective care for our veterans. Providing budget numbers a year in advance allows VA facilities to budget for additional medical personnel or equipment and ensure that our veterans are not left waiting for care. Space cosponsored the legislation in the House.

Congressman Space has been serving Ohio's 18th Congressional district since 2007. He has been working to restore integrity to the office and create the conditions to bring new jobs and industry to Ohio.
