Brown Cosponsors Bill To Protect Sanctity Of Marriage In Nation's Capitol

Statement

Date: Oct. 7, 2009
Location: Washington, D.C.
Issues: Marriage

As the DC Council discusses a resolution that would legalize gay marriage in the district, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) made the following statement on his cosponsorship of H.R. 2608, the DC Defense of Marriage Act, legislation that preserves and defends the meaning of marriage in the nation's capitol:

"As a recipient of the Family Research Council's "True Blue" Award for consistent support of families in the 110th Congress, I have always demonstrated unwavering commitment to protecting American families.

Strong families, and the marriages that hold them together, are the core of our society. I strongly support the DC Defense of Marriage Act as it will prevent the DC City Council from redefining the institution of marriage despite the strong objections of the majority of city residents."

If the legislation passes DC Council and it is approved by the Mayor, Congress has 30 days to enact a joint resolution of disapproval. President Obama would have to sign that resolution for the city law to be blocked.
