Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ron Klein (FL-22) today strongly supported legislation passed by the U.S. House to fund critical Everglades restoration and clean energy projects in South Florida. The Fiscal Year 2010 Energy and Water Appropriations bill (H.R. 3183) passed today includes over $180 million for Everglades restoration, as well as $2 million for the Florida Atlantic University National Open-Ocean Energy Laboratory in Dania Beach.

"The House today made serious, forward looking investments in South Florida," Klein said. "My colleagues and I have kept up the fight for federal support for Everglades restoration, and today's $180 million investment in the River of Grass is another step toward preserving this national treasure for the next generation. Additionally, I am especially proud of the federal support we secured for the innovative, cutting-edge ocean energy project run by Florida Atlantic University. Their scientists are developing the next generation of homegrown, clean, affordable alternative energy. By harnessing the power of the Gulf Stream, we can create jobs in our community and make South Florida a national leader in clean energy technology."

Today's legislation also makes key investments in clean energy, environmental cleanup, nuclear non-proliferation, and water infrastructure nationwide. It includes a special focus on scientific research that works to address our country's long-term energy needs, such as the ocean energy project at FAU. The bill is fiscally responsible, targeting funding to high-priority projects.
