Brown On Rahall's Anti-Energy Bill

Statement

Date: Sept. 16, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) issued the following statement criticizing a flawed energy bill (H.R. 3534) sponsored by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV):

"The legislation introduced today is not the solution that struggling middle-class families and small businesses are looking for.

Instead of proposing an ‘all-of-the-above' energy plan that would develop all types of American-made energy and create thousands of jobs, Democrats are proposing a bill that would increase taxes, raise fees, expand government bureaucracy, and postpone production of wind, solar, oil and natural gas. This comes on top of their cap and tax bill that passed the House earlier this year and would cost American's thousands of dollars in increased energy costs every year.

Additionally, Rahall's bill would prevent the development of offshore aquaculture, an industry that would facilitate safe seafood sources and reduce our increasing dependence on imported seafood while creating desperately needed jobs for unemployed fishermen in coastal South Carolina and providing an economic boost to our coastal communities.

My colleagues and I continue to stand by our bill, the American Energy Act as a better way forward that would grow our economy, create new high-paying jobs, protect our environment and provide safe, clean and affordable energy. It is the fastest route away from foreign oil and towards a cleaner, more reliable and secure domestic-based energy future."
