Brown Signs Onto Legislation To Stop All Federal Funding Of ACORN

Statement

Date: Sept. 15, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) became a cosponsor of the Defund ACORN Act, legislation introduced by House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) that will sever all ties between the federal government and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). House Republicans have also sent a letter to President Obama asking him to take action to end taxpayer funding of ACORN. After signing onto the Defund ACORN Act Congressman Brown issued the following statement:

"It has become clear that ACORN is unable to use federal funding properly. They have misused our constituents' hard earned dollars and, for this reason, they must NOT receive another cent of American taxpayers' money.

As they have been tied to questionable activity, I am proud to join my Republican colleagues in taking action to terminate all federal funding to ACORN and its affiliates.

Our constituents are facing financial hardships of their own, and as our national deficit continues to grow, the last place taxpayer dollars should be allocated is to an organization known for its blatant misuse of these funds."

NOTE: An analysis of federal data determined that ACORN has received more than $53 million in direct funding from the federal government since 1994, and has likely received substantially more indirectly through states and localities that receive federal block grants.
