Letter To Ranking Member, Ros-Lehtinen

Letter

Date: Sept. 16, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14), the Ranking Republican of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, thanked the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, for joining him in supporting freedom and democracy for the Honduran people. Mack also signed on as an original cosponsor of Ros-Lehtinen's resolution on Honduras.

Earlier this year, Mack introduced a resolution expressing Congress' support for the Venezuelan Jewish community against state-sponsored terrorism (H.Res.124), as well as a resolution supporting the people of Honduras (H.Res.619).

The text of Mack's letter to Ranking Member Ros-Lehtinen follows:

September 16, 2009

Dear Ranking Member Ros-Lehtinen:

I wish to thank you for joining me in championing the cause of freedom and democracy in Honduras.

Your resolution urging the Obama Administration to recognize the upcoming presidential elections is a much-needed additional voice to mine in calling for the Administration to address the dangers of failure of United States policy in Honduras.

As you are aware, as the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, I have worked hard to defend freedom and the rule of law in Honduras. In July, I led a delegation to Honduras to meet with government officials, democracy groups, and business leaders who faced down the tyranny of Manuel Zelaya and his Chavez-backed regime. I also introduced a resolution (H. Res. 619)--which has garnered strong Republican support--expressing the support of the House Representatives for the people of Honduras. So, Madam Ranking Member, your support now is very meaningful.

Again, I want to commend you for your joining me and the Honduran people in this fight. The people of Honduras are struggling for the very survival of their democracy. I look forward to working with you on this issue and others in the defense of freedom, security, and prosperity in Latin America. We must send a clear message that freedom matters.

Sincerely,

CONNIE MACK
Member of Congress
