Broun Supports Czar Accountability Bill

Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today announced his co-sponsorship of Georgia Representative Jack Kingston's Czar Accountability and Reform (CZAR) Act of 2009 (H.R. 3226). Congressman Broun's support of this bill is the next step in his efforts to increase accountability and transparency with the 32 czars this administration has put in place. In July, Congressman Broun offered an amendment to eliminate funding for the Climate Czar and the Green Jobs Czar (Van Jones) that failed on the House floor by a vote of 149-282. The Rules Committee silenced his attempts to offer additional amendments to address all 30 czar appointments.

"For too long, the Executive Branch has skirted Senate confirmation proceedings and Congressional oversight by appointing Czars to oversee vast parts of the federal government. Administrations from both parties have been guilty of this practice.

"I was disappointed in July when my attempt to address the newly created Czar positions was defeated in the House. My amendment would have cut funding for the President's former Green Jobs Czar, Van Jones, before he was pressured to resign for past statements he made about the government being complicit in 9/11 and for calling members of the GOP names that aren't fit to print.

"I want to thank Representative Kingston for continuing to bring attention to the lack of transparency and accountability in the Czar appointments. We do not need, and should not have, ‘Czars.' The last time I checked, only pre-Communist Russia had Czars, and we are most certainly not in Russia. I urge Speaker Pelosi to bring this bill to the floor to reclaim our Constitutional footing as the check on the Executive branch," said Congressman Paul Broun.
