Statement of Bob McDonnell on 8th Anniversary of September 11th

Statement

Date: Sept. 11, 2009
Location: Richmond, VA

Bob McDonnell, Republican gubernatorial nominee and former Attorney General of Virginia, issued the following statement regarding the 8th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th.

“Eight years ago Virginia, and all of America, came under attack. On one of the darkest days in our history, thousands of mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, husbands and wives were taken from their families and their friends. A stunned nation gathered in front of televisions, watching as we found ourselves under attack. In the minutes and hours that followed, countless acts of heroism took place. First responders, co-workers and individuals who had just begun what should have been another routine day of work, were suddenly thrust into cataclysmic scenes of smoke and confusion. And they rose to this extraordinary occasion like only Americans can: with valor, courage and selflessness.

The days following the attacks were marked by a nation grieving as one. The weeks and months after that will always be remembered as a nation responding as one. Men and women, including eventually my oldest daughter Jeanine, left behind their families, jobs and lives here at home to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. Sadly, many of these Americans would not return. Like the heroes of the day that led to their call to service, they too gave their all for their fellow citizens.

Today we pause again to remember those we lost eight years ago this morning, on what had dawned as another beautiful day in early September. We also pause to remember those we have lost in the years following that tragic day. We continue to hold in our prayers the men and women who right this minute stand in defense of our freedoms from Afghanistan to Iraq, and all across the globe. We also salute, with renewed appreciation, the police, sheriffs, firefighters and law enforcement personnel who daily protect our liberties. And we remember that public safety is the foremost duty of government.

May God continue to bless America.”
