Governor Bill Richardson Addresses 2009 Border Governors Conference

Governor Bill Richardson today addressed the 2009 Border Governors Conference in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Governor highlighted the progress made from increased cooperation from governors on both sides of the border and stressed the importance of continued partnership to the economy of the border region.

“Our border region has become one of the most dynamic economic sectors in the world, yet we lag in modernizing our border infrastructure,” Governor Richardson said. “Addressing these infrastructure needs and bringing all of our border crossings up to the highest technical capabilities to meet the logistical needs of the 21st Century's global marketplace must be a
priority.”

While attending the Border Governors Conference Governor Bill Richardson was able to finalize the agreement with the state of Sonora, Mexico to create a New Mexico/Sonora Commission.

Governor Richardson met with officials from Sonora this morning, and stressed the importance of working closely with them to address border issues affecting both states, such as tourism, security issues and economic development. The creation of the New Mexico/Sonora Commission
will connect both states' Cabinet members and other appointed business and industry leaders to strengthen border related initiatives.

Governor Richardson today also visited Mexico's Baseball Hall of Fame where he was honored by members of the 1957 and 1958 world champion Monterrey Little League team. During a special tour of the museum, the Governor, who was the pitcher of his little league team in Mexico City, and the men shared stories about their time in little league and memories of former teammates.
