Governor Applauds New Affordable Housing Units in Portland

Governor John E. Baldacci today participated in the grand opening of 53 Danforth, an innovative affordable and workforce housing apartment building in downtown Portland. Thirty of the 43 housing units are set aside for low-income renters.

The Governor highlighted the public-private collaboration that included developers, financiers and local, state and federal governments.

"This building will provide homes for hard-working individuals and families right here in the heart of the community center," said Governor Baldacci. "Danforth is also a great example of smart growth and downtown revitalization. Sighting new construction such as this housing in places with existing infrastructure reduces sprawl and decreases the costs to construct and maintain the building. And energy efficiency standards employed here will help reduce energy costs and provide a better environment for all."

"53 Danforth is an exciting project," said the Governor. "I'm pleased that MaineHousing provided a significant portion of its financing, including a $2 million tax credit, $1.65 million subsidy and $3 million loan."

The Governor was joined today by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Portland Mayor Jill Duson and MaineHousing Director Dale McCormick, as well as Wright-Ryan Construction, TD Banknorth and developers Bobby Monks and Nathan Szanton.
