Congressman Phil Hare today voted for the Comprehensive American Energy Security & Consumer Protection Act, legislation that would increase domestic supply, invest in alternatives, and end taxpayer subsidies for big oil companies.
"When it comes to lowering gas prices and reducing our dependence on foreign oil, I believe all solutions must be on the table." Hare said. "This comprehensive energy bill is exactly what my constituents need and deserve."
The Comprehensive American Energy Security & Consumer Protection Act responsibly opens up additional areas for oil and gas drilling. It permits leasing between 50 and 100 miles offshore if a state agrees to allow exploration off of their coastline.
It extends several tax incentives for the production of alternative forms of energy including wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal.
It pays for these investments in 21st century energy by rolling back tax breaks for big oil companies and requiring them to pay overdue royalties on their leased lands. "Big oil should not receive another cent from the federal government," Hare said. "Sending hard earned taxpayer dollars to profit rich oil companies is an insult to the American people, especially at a time of record high gas prices and even higher corporate profits."
Hare called Republican opposition to the bill "politics at its worst." "We have met them more than half way," he said. "It's time for Republicans to join us in making the compromises necessary to enact a comprehensive energy plan. Americans want lower gas prices and real energy security, not more stunts."
