Congressman Phil Hare, a member of the House Trade Working Group, released the following statement in response to this morning's employment situation report which shows the United States lost 51,000 jobs in July, bringing the total job loss for 2008 to 463,000 and the unemployment rate to 5.7%.
"We are in a recession. My constituentsfaced with growing job losses, record gas prices, and skyrocketing health care costsdon't need an economist to confirm that fact.
"Unemployment is at the highest level in four years. We've lost nearly half a million jobs in 2008 alone. Working families are struggling to afford the basic necessities.
"The crux of this economic failure can be tied to our broken trade policies. An Economic Policy Institute report released this week shows we've lost over 2 million jobs to China in the last seven yearsincluding 100,000 from Illinois. We must do better.
"It is long past time for a new direction on trade that gives American workers a fighting chance to keep their jobs."
