Fortenberry To Host Congressional Field Hearing On Health And Wellness In Lincoln

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry will be hosting a field hearing of the House Agriculture Committee's Subcommittee on Nutrition in Lincoln on Wednesday, August 5, 2009. The hearing, entitled "Addressing the ‘Health' in Health Care: Nutrition, Prevention, and Wellness Practices," will explore the cost savings and best practices of good nutrition, including fresh, locally raised foods, prevention, and wellness initiatives, featuring expert testimony from regional and national business and health care executives as well as research scientists. Congressman Joe Baca (D-CA), chairman of the subcommittee, and Congressman Fortenberry, ranking member, will lead the proceedings.

"We must shift the health care paradigm in America, moving from a system that treats the symptoms of sickness and disease to one that promotes lifelong wellness and prevention for all Americans," Fortenberry said. "In the midst of a critical national discussion on health care, it is essential that we fully explore the potential health outcomes and cost savings of wellness strategies. I am pleased to host an official forum on this matter in Nebraska, where several businesses and organizations are successfully employing practices that improve health and save money."

The hearing is open to the public. It will begin at 10 a.m. A media availability with Representatives Fortenberry and Baca will follow the conclusion of the hearing.
