Boozman: Commutation For Ramos And Compean Appropriate

Press Release

Date: Jan. 21, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative John Boozman announced his pleasure with the decision by President Bush to commute the sentence of two former U.S. Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who were convicted in the 2005 shooting of a Mexican drug runner attempting to smuggle 800 pounds of marijuana over the American border near El Paso, Texas.

"President Bush's decision to shorten the jail term of Ramos and Compean was appropriate. We have a commitment to stand behind our Border Patrol Agents and give these courageous men and women the tools they need to protect America from those who would illegally enter our country, especially criminals and drug smugglers.

In 2007 Congressman Boozman cosponsored legislation to grant a Congressional Pardon to the Border Patrol Agents. He also cosponsored H.Con.Res. 37 which called for a swift pardon for the Border Patrol Agents. The same year Boozman also signed onto two letters to President Bush asking for the commutation of the men's sentences.
