Congresswoman Brown Deeply Troubled by Government Report on June Unemployment Rate in Florida

Congresswoman Brown today made the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced nationwide unemployment rates for the month of June:

"I was deeply troubled by today's announcement that Florida's unemployment rate crept above 10 percent in June for the first time since the Bureau began compiling unemployment figures in 1976. Last month's unemployment rate of 10.6 percent represents a 4.6 percent increase in the past year and provides a troubling reminder of the length and scope of the current recession."

"I am committed to doing everything I can in Washington to help my constituents back home, many of whom are struggling to find work in this challenging economy. In January, I was proud to support President Obama's economic stimulus plan, which injects much needed federal dollars into Florida and communities around the nation in order to stimulate economic growth and slow unemployment. I still believe transportation and infrastructure projects hold the greatest potential to create jobs quickly, so I will continue to fight for the creation of such projects throughout Florida."

"More recently, I was proud to host two job fairs in my district - the first in Jacksonville on May 18 and the second in Orlando on June 29 - to connect my constituents with potential employers in their own communities. Many of these employers were government agencies, such as the Social Security administration, armed forces, and public universities, empowered to hire more workers thanks to funds from the stimulus plan passed in January. The constituent turnout at each event was phenomenal, with reports estimating between 8,500 and 10,000 participants in each city."

"I will use the remainder of the 111th Congress to fight for greater federal investment in Florida, especially in much needed transportation and infrastructure projects. Moving forward, I look forward to supporting any legislation that promotes our economic recovery and brings aid to Floridians during these difficult economic times."
