Murphy Statement On Earth Day

Press Release

Date: April 22, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement on Earth Day 2009.

"As we celebrate Earth Day today, we in Connecticut should be proud of what we've accomplished in just the last few months to protect our corner of the Earth. We scored a huge victory when President Obama signed legislation to make the Metacomet Monadnock Mattabesett (MMM) Trail in central Connecticut the ninth National Scenic Trail in the program's 40-year history. And we secured funding to protect and preserve a fish and wildlife refuge that spans four New England states, including Connecticut.

"Connecticut can also be proud that it was one of the first states in the nation to adopt a forward-looking regional cap-and-trade system - the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) - to combat global warming. It's time for our state to lead the rest of the country in continuing the work we started to protect our planet.

"I am thrilled to be at the table, representing Connecticut, as the House Energy and Commerce Committee begins to debate landmark climate change legislation that will reflect the mission of Earth Day - to create a healthy, sustainable environment."
