Kennedy, Kerry, Frank Release Statement Following Meeting with ATK CEO Dan Murphy

Statement

Today, Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, and Congressman Barney Frank, released the following joint statement after a meeting with Alliant Techsystems CEO Dan Murphy:

We continue to regret this situation and the loss of jobs. Now that it is clear that the contract is about to expire and that it will not provide additional work in either New Bedford or Puerto Rico, we will work to do the next best thing - which is to try to help another company to purchase the plant and to get contracts through the Department of Defense or elsewhere that will help keep jobs in New Bedford.

In pursuing this, we have Mr. Murphy's pledge that ATK will give its full cooperation, and that it will comply with both the spirit and the letter of the WARN Act, which sets strict rules about how much warning employers must give employees before they are laid off.

We will continue to work with Mayor Lang and the New Bedford Economic Development Council to find a new company to move into the city.
